Reading Notes: Japanese Mythology, Part A

I really admire the love the between Izanagi and Izanami. However, they were separated by the jealousy of the immortal Gods, who were their descendants. Yet, both of them did not want to take revenge, but they search to stay together. I want to retell the story where they can stay together despise the curse of the immortal Gods. I want to expand the original story and add an after story. First, the immortal Gods saw how Izanami loved the mortal world. They feared of her power in giving birth to immortals, and she might give birth to someone with greater power than them. So, they teamed up to kill her. After Izanami died and her soul descended to Yomi, Izanagi grieved for the loss of his wife and followed her to the Yomi. Knowing that he cannot revive her life and immortality, he decided to split his life and immortality with her. He swore that the sky will only exist if love still exists. Other Gods want to prevent him but failed since Izanagi warned them that he will shatter the heaven if they stop him. Due to his swear, Izanami’s soul returned to Izanagi. However, her soul was weak and cannot stay far away from Yomi and walk under the light. Since then, Izanagi resided on isle of Ahaji to live with his wife. Before doing so, Izanagi afraid that the immortal Gods would enslave the mortal that Izanami had loved so dearly. Izanagi cursed that each immortal God have to descend to the mortal realm and live for 100 years as a mortal. After their term, they can return back to heaven, and anyone does not do so, they will lose their immortality. Since then, the Japanese emperor is known as the son of heaven because they are the descended Gods.
